Frequently asked questions (and answers).
Why do I have to pay to see the info that has been free in the past? Well…it was never our intention to charge our fans…ever. We had hoped that advertisers and site sponsors would defer the cost of maintaining our site. With the economy and external factors being what they are these days… we could not generate enough funds from sponsors to run the site. It has been a considerable investment of time and money thus far. Rather than shut the site down, the subscription model was adapted. We hope the NJ hockey community will support our efforts by purchasing a membership at our nominal pricing. We understand this is not a popular decision, especially from the colorful and graphically articulate emails we have received thus far. Visit our subscription page for more reasons to subscribe and thanks again for your understanding.
I don’t have the means to pay for a subscription but I would really love to access my favorite information on NJ hockey… Are there other options? Yes, NJP interns get free membership included in their package along with a free NJP T-shirt, NJP pens and pin, and a NJP drawstring bookbag. You can submit an application for consideration at any time. Please see the intern link for more info. It is a serious commitment. Thus far, almost half of the submissions have been accepted. We expect to have over 50 interns this year helping create content. Maybe the next one can be you?
Is all the information on the site “pay” only? No, there is a considerable amount of content that is free on the site. Our home page articles, twitter updates, site updates page, all pages on the “Business Office” and “Community” menu’s as well as our page on the NJ High School Hockey Hall of Fame are free of charge…
I signed up and paid for membership but I have not received any further instruction. What do I do? The NJP membership system automatically emails a member invite with all the instructions you need to get access to all content. Sometimes overzealous spam filters capture this correspondence. Check your junk mail folder. In the unlikely chance that the correspondence is not in your spam folder, contact us at njpowerranking@yahoo.com and will get you on-line promptly.
I get a message that says access is denied? What do I do? The NJP membership system allows three IP addresses per membership. Once this amount is exceeded, your membership gets locked down. If you get this message, you will not be able to access the website. It is important to safeguard your user name and password to make sure this does not happen. It can also happen if you access the site from work, home, mobile, and another computer. We will reset your account the first time but continued lock downs could result in your membership needing to be reissued or if we feel it is being abused, terminated completely. If you need to access from numerous devices on a regular basis, you are asked to purchase an additional membership.
Do I have to use paypal for my purchase? When the membership feature was first installed, all subscribers needed a paypal account to register. That feature has now been removed so fans can sign up without using paypal and pay directly with a credit card.
Is the payments recurring for membership? When we first started our subscription service, all payments were entered as recurring. This feature has been been eliminated. For those of you who do not want a recurring charge, login to paypal and there is a simple procedure to change your payment type. You would have received emails prior to your expiration to confirm that you wanted the next years membership.
My credit card was billed twice? What do I do? Please be careful when submitting your membership to only hit the pay button one time. If your credit card is charged twice, just drop an email to njpowerranking@yahoo.com and the refund will be processed right away.
I signed up but I did not receive any email invite with login information? Please check your spam folder. If there is not an invite, please contact us at njpowerranking@yahoo.com and we will resolve the issue promptly.
I have tried to friend NJP on facebook but it says I can not be added because NJP has too many friends… is there another way? Yes…we have two accounts on facebook. Search “njpowerrank” and friend us there. We update, message and wall post on both pages… Also look for us on LinkedIn…
Our entire team would like to sign up for memberships…do you have any special prices? Yes, we offer volume discounted pricing. See the “Business Office” menu or this link… http://www.njpowerranking.com/volume-discounts-for-teams/
Does NJP only cover high school hockey in New Jersey? NJPowerRanking.com has been reporting on high school hockey in New Jersey for 4 years. It’s coverage continues to expand with an abundance of information, analysis, rankings and reports as well as an abundance of articles and profiles on New Jersey’s favorite sport. NJP now will be adding to their coverage of youth hockey, junior hockey, college hockey, and womens hockey for the 2011-12 season, We will also have articles and reports on NJ players who have gone outside of NJ to play as well as new semi pro and professional teams in NJ such as the Trenton Titans and NJ Outlaws. That’s a lot of hockey!!
How do you select players for “Snipes”?  We are constantly reviewing game information weekly (sometimes daily) for special games played by NJ players at all levels. We try to highlight great performances throughout the state. on any given night. It is impossible for us to review every game box score and visit every rink every night. So feel free to send us “suggestions”. You can help be our eyes and ears at the rinks. No guarantees that your suggestion will be used but we appreciate the help.
How do you determine the ratings used in your ranking system?  NJPowerRanking.com has developed a formula that takes many factors into consideration to develop the rating/rankings. Some of the measures used are win percentage, margin of victory, goals allowed, a trend factor and most importantly, a schedule strength factor. Our system has been used for the nightly Predictor on the high school level for 4 seasons. Our cumulative win percentage is currently 84%. For high school, the rating difference between teams divided by 2 is the expected margin of victory for the higher rated team in any given game. Our algorithm also determines the score based on that expected victory margin as well as the average goals scored and allowed by each team to determine a predicted game score. Please note that pre-season ratings and rankings are editorial not mathematical. We start our ranking formula when their is enough games played to be statistically viable. This will occur about 2-3 weeks into the high school season. Also note, we do not pick ties when the rating formula predicts it so you may find some games not selected on any given day. For State playoffs, we force the Predictor to chose a winner and pick every game in the grid. Our cumulative record in state playoff selections is 85%.

Why did the Predictor stay away from the Mo Beard – Morris Knolls game? Teams too evenly matched? Anyway the game ended in a 1-1 tie and the Predictor doesn’t count ties as losses, even though a heavily favored team is, at times, knotted by a much lesser rival.
You once gave a lengthy explanation as to why a tie doesn’t count as a loss. Would you kindly print it again, and if possible also email me the explanation.
Did the Predictor EVER pick a tie?
Thank You
Hi Anna… The Predictor usually selects about 90% of any of the games on tap for a given evening. When you don’t see a game listed, it’s because the game is selected as a tie. If the teams are within 0.3 rating points, the system selects the game as tied. Any games that finish in a tie that are selected are not counted in the win loss percentage. Thus if we pick a game 3-2 or 11-0 and it ends 2-2, it’s a pass. For state playoffs purposes, where ties are not possible, we force the system to select a winner. Our percentage has been very consistent using both methods. The purpose of the predictor is always to provide some entertainment and pre-game rivalry and discussion, but obviously it is also to support and validate the ranking and rating system in place. As we have said numerous times, the system is horribly flawed, far from perfect, and based on a math formula. It does not consider who shows up for any given game, who plays junior, who is sick, who had so much homework they couldn’t play, which goalie is being used, who is injured, etc… In the example you used, the Predictor picked a 1-1 tie. But the game is just left off the grid when that happens. Again, not perfect by any means but it is what it is… I hope this helps.
